Wander Around the Lynde House Museum

Lynde House is Durham Region's oldest home and a stunning example of Georgian-era architecture. Visitors will gain knowledge about the Lynde family's early life in this country as Colonists, the Indigenous peoples who lived here before them, the role of Lynde House in the War of 1812 (including General Brock's visit), the evolution of Whitby into a significant coast and stopping place, the significance of the Warren General Store & Post Office, and the Lyndes' forward-thinking beliefs about abolition and women's equality. Guests will leave the house and proceed to the Drive Shed display to see the O'Donovan Cutter Sleigh and then to Clarissa Lynde's Heritage Kitchen Garden to gain knowledge about the crops cultivated for nourishment, healthcare, and other purposes. During the War of 1812, this house served as a guest house in between the major cities of York and Kingston. It is now the Durham region's oldest home. During the war, delegates of the British Army and later royal family members stayed at the house. It now serves as a museum after being relocated from its previous location at 960 Dundas Street West to Cullen Gardens and then again to its present location by the Town of Whitby.

Inside, the museum depicts the lifestyle of the original Lynde household and other families from the same era. Jabez's descendants still live in the area.
